I (or rather my holding company) own portions of equity in about 10 businesses right now. Next year that number will likely triple. Though it will take a number of years, I expect that the companies in which I own minor/silent equity will eventually pay me more money than even the companies I personally run and in which I own majority stakes. If you have the ability to invest and understand small business pretty well, then I highly recommend building a portfolio of small to medium-sized positions in small, privately owned companies. With the right picks you will get equity, synergy from new partners, an expanded network, and one of my personal favorites, cash flow.
So how did I do it? Yes, I am technically a millionaire...but I don't pay myself that much and the excess essentially goes towards growing my businesses. Very little of my net-worth is liquid, and that will probably be true for the next decade. All that to say; it's not like I'm throwing bundles of cash at new owners to get pieces of their companies. I have definitely spent some cash, but most of my ability to purchase so many companies comes from my capacity to discount services from companies I own, as well as allow limited access to myself and my strategies. If you own a service business that does anything a typical startup would need (lawyer, accountant, design, marketing, development, lead generation, etc) you can employ this strategy. Just to be clear, so far on every one of these deals, I have taken cash for my services plus equity.
Before you start building your small-business portfolio you need 3 things: reputation, leverage and a commitment to a long-term strategy.
If you're not quite ready to start buying into small businesses, at least start with something. Even if you only have $100 a month to invest (if you don't, then find a way to get it), I recommend at least putting a set amount monthly into an index fund. Thoughtful investing is one of the most important things we can do in life. As I learn to do it with money, I'm learning to do it in the more important areas of life as well.
