First, let me lay some groundwork: yes, I do think dreams are incredibly important. Here are some reasons I’m a big believer in dreaming:
Dreams can give us clarity.
Dreams can give us drive.
Dreams can help us live and grow outside of our seen limits.
Dreams can help spread passion and joy to others.
But I also think that dreams only have true value if they are connected to our calling, and if we do not use them as an excuse to abandon or hurt the people in our lives whom we are supposed to love. So, for example, if your dream requires you to effectively or actually ditch your marriage, then something should be readjusted. Here’s the BIG thing to understand; dreams are more about why you love than what you love. For example, if your dream is to be a doctor, you should step back and dissect why that’s your dream. Is it because you love the science of medicine? Is it because you love the respect that would come with the job? Is it because you love helping people? Maybe being an MD is the perfect fit...or maybe there are a myriad of strong fits for the “why” of your dream.
My dream is basically leadership. Being able to inspire and work with others to achieve great things. Seeing people’s lives changed because of my words. At first, I was in ministry (which was absolutely the right thing at that time). I got to teach, inspire, and lead people in an extremely important part of their lives. I never, NEVER, thought I would leave ministry. It was my calling...it was my dream. Maybe you’ve figured this out by now too - we don’t get to pick our destiny. As soon as we think we know what will happen next, something we couldn’t have even guessed will introduce itself into the scenario. Well, as you probably know, I eventually left business and became an entrepreneur. Turns out the “why” of my dream, even the spiritually focused part of it all, also exists in the business world. Leadership, opportunity for impact...it’s all here.
Dreams matter. But the “why” of your dreams matters more.
