Call it whatever you want; alliances, partnerships, connections...they are one of the most important parts of building a life of impact. Whether you are trying to make more money in business, wanting to see your non-profit reach more people, or have a dream to start 100 churches, building a portfolio of strategic connections will be a significant component of reaching your goal.
At this point, I know quite a few interesting people. Some are affluent some aren’t. Some are business leaders, some are scholars, and some are in the nonprofit world. Some have invaluable wisdom bred from world experience, while others have impressive book-smarts. These strategic connections give me access to great mentors, referrals, provide credibility, and also create an existing pool of potential investors for future projects.
Before I get into the “how”, let me further define the “what”. Just break down term: “strategic - connections”. Being popular and knowing a lot of people does not necessarily accomplish what you want. You need to be connecting with people and organizations to which you can bring value, and from which you can receive value. Let’s use my life as an example. I own The App Guys and am looking to eventually start new businesses every year. Many will probably be in the digital/ media spaces. So in my case, it is ideal to be connected with other entrepreneurs and business leaders. Those are the people that will need my services the most, and will also be the people who may be investors in companies/projects I start in the future.
For you it may be important to be connected with leaders in the medical field, non-profit founders, or executives at larger companies. It really depends on where you’re heading.
Here are some tips for building strategic connections:
Invite yourself. I have invited myself to meet people and go to meetings that I would never have otherwise gotten into. Go connect with the best people you can when opportunity arises. Some will reject you, but some won’t.
Don’t sell. You do not need to go right into a sales pitch, or a big request of any kind. Build relationships. Sometimes you can eventually try to sell something, but usually with these kinds of connections you should wait for them to come to you.
Add value. Don’t just take; give. Much of the time this won’t mean offering your services or discounts or anything like that. It may mean connecting them with someone they should know, or simply being invested in conversations in a way that they enjoy without you positioning yourself to take something.
As always, play the long game. Be patient. Be willing to take 10 years of actively working on connections before seeing a “tipping point” of really strong results.
There’s a lot more that can be said about this, but basically be intentional and give more than you take. Gary V says he always tries to give 51% in relationships.
Most importantly, the people you are connected with are an indicator of who you are becoming. Connect with people who you want, in some important way, to be like. Over time, it will have a huge impact on your life.
Here’s a book that really helps me in this area of building connections:
