Letting people go is never fun.Unfortunately, knowing how to let people go is and always will be an important skill for any leader of an organization to possess.
Here are a few tips to keep in mind when you have to let someone go:
Communicate clearly on the problems beforehand. They should know well before being let go that their performance is lacking and that if it doesn’t change they will be let go in the near future.
When you let someone go tell them the specific reasons in writing. You don’t need to insult them or take your anger out on them, but a clear explanation for their termination may help them make some personal changes for future success.
Make a clean break. Do not leave the door open for them to have “one more chance” or to come back later. Kindness, tact, and firmness go a long way in maintaining both their respect and your authority. You have to decisively and totally move on, and when you do it’s not your place or responsibility to console them after they’re already gone.
When you fire someone it probably means they’ve underperformed and therefore lost you quite a bit of money through wasted operational costs and lost opportunities. Just move on. Losses are a part of the success formula. Treat people well, even when they haven’t done their part, and be willing to put yourself through the hardship of cutting people loose even when it’s uncomfortable.
