Right now I’m sitting in a Panera Bread restaurant doing some work on my computer. One of the things on the agenda is this article. For me, regularly writing is an important discipline in my life, which means I make sure to do it when I don’t want to or “can’t”. Over the last 20 minutes, I’ve not been sure how to get started on a new article, I guess this is what they call “writer’s block”. For a split second, I almost let myself off the hook. I’ve done a decent amount today and want to relax a bit. I’m a month ahead on my writing, I could just put it off for a day…
But that’s not who I want to be. I want to be someone who overcomes. Someone who is stronger than my laziness or frustrations or desire to get a break. So in cases like this one, when I have a “block” and just “can’t” do something I have a system: I just start. Sometimes you have to JUST START. “Ready, fire, aim”. Momentum is the real goal. Momentum is usually 10x more important than the actual task you “can’t” get done.
In our home we tell our kids they are not allowed to say “I can’t”. I’m just a firm believer that each of us is hugely equipped to overcome and solve what seem to be big problems. I want my kids to habitually see that they can do those things that seem too hard. That thing you don’t think you can do...you probably CAN.
Go for it. Just start.
